Paunchy James Buchanan had little feet and took tiny
quick steps when he walked. He suffered from a condition known as “wry
neck,” the result of having one eye nearsighted and the other farsighted,
which caused him to carry his head tilted to one side.
Buchanan was the only president who never married.
He was considered the last “doughface”;
this was slang for someone who spoke one way about slavery and acted another
