As the wife of the first President of the United State,
Martha was destined to be an American icon. Martha surely could not imagine
that Americans would forever see her as a little, white-haired lady with
a hair doily. I choose to paint a younger Martha, minus her hair net;
a Martha more the way she might have looked when George fell in love with
her. The intense red background and oversized nail add an iconic overtone.
