When people ask me what I paint, I usually just say, “figures.”
Some of my figures are imagined, some mythological; many are real people
painted from life or memory. Even my still lives are humans. Humans interest
me becasue they are complex and ridiculous, simple and brilliant, tragic
and frightening.
Some people believe that painting the figure is passé,
but as long as humans keep thinking up new ways to make old mistakes,
there will be artists developing new ways to chronicle these triumphs
and missteps.
